Olomouc Day Trip: Moravia’s Historic University City

Olomouc is one of the most rewarding Czech cities and one of the least crowded. It has a large, well-preserved historic centre, a young student population and a relaxed pace that makes it a good contrast to Prague. It works as a long day trip or, better, an overnight stay.

Getting there

Fast trains from Prague take roughly two hours. Operators and timetables change, so check current options on the train and bus guide and book early for weekends. From Brno, the journey is shorter, which makes Olomouc easy to combine with a Moravia trip.

What to see

  • Upper Square (Horní náměstí): the centre of the old town, with the town hall, its astronomical clock and several baroque fountains.
  • Holy Trinity Column: a large baroque monument on the square, on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
  • St Wenceslas Cathedral and the Přemyslid Palace: a short walk uphill, with views over the old town.
  • Parks and ramparts: green spaces around the old town are good for a slow walk.

Eat and drink

Olomouc is known for its cured cheese (tvarůžky), which has a strong smell and a loyal following. Try it fried or on a sandwich if you are curious. The student population means there are plenty of cafés and pubs. For the wider Czech food picture, see the beer and food hub.

Planning tips

  • Allow a full day if you are visiting from Prague, or stay one night.
  • Check opening days for the museums and the cathedral before you go.
  • Combine it with Brno or the Moravian Karst on a longer Moravia trip.
