Beyond Prague and the heritage towns, the Czech Republic has national parks, sandstone rock towns, mountain ridges and a dense network of marked hiking and cycling routes. You do not need to be an expert hiker: many of the best areas can be reached by train and bus, and trails are marked clearly.
Regions to explore
- Krkonoše (Giant Mountains): the highest Czech mountains and the country’s main ski area.
- Šumava: forests, lakes and the Lipno area in the southwest.
- Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj): sandstone towers, castle ruins and easy walking.
- Bohemian Switzerland: gorges and rock formations near the German border.
- Moravian Karst: caves and the Macocha Abyss near Brno.
