Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj): Rock Towns and Castles

The Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) is a landscape of sandstone towers, forested valleys and ruined castles northeast of Prague. It is one of the oldest protected areas in the country and is excellent for easy to moderate walks.

Highlights

  • Prachov Rocks: a rock town with marked paths, viewpoints and narrow passages between sandstone formations.
  • Hrubá Skála and Trosky: castle sites with dramatic positions. Trosky’s twin towers are a landmark of the region.
  • Town of Jičín and Turnov: convenient bases with cafés and accommodation.

Getting there

The area is reached from Prague by train and bus, usually with a change. Journey times are around two hours or more, so a long day trip is possible, but an overnight stay is easier.

Tips

  • Wear shoes with grip, since rock paths can be slippery when wet.
  • Check opening dates for castles.
  • Weekends are busier than weekdays.
