The Moravian Karst (Moravský kras) is a protected landscape north of Brno with the largest cave system in the Czech Republic. It is a good rainy-day option and a good choice for families and anyone who enjoys walking in forested gorges.
What to see
- Punkva Caves: a guided route through the cave system that includes an underground boat section. It is one of the most popular visits in the area.
- Macocha Abyss: a deep sinkhole that you can look into from viewing platforms above, with a path down to the bottom.
- Other caves: several smaller show caves, each with a different character and different tour lengths.
Getting there
The area is close to Brno, usually within an hour. Public transport is possible, often with a train to Blansko and a local bus or walk, but timetables are limited in places. A car or a guided tour makes the day simpler. Check current transport options before you go.
Booking and timing
- Cave tickets are often limited. Book ahead for summer, weekends and school holidays.
- Some caves have seasonal opening patterns. Check which are open on your dates.
- Caves are cool inside, so bring a layer even in summer.
- Allow most of a day if you want to combine the caves with a walk.
Good to know
Tours involve steps, so check accessibility details if anyone in your group has mobility needs. For other nature options, see Outdoors and Nature.
