The Krkonoše, or Giant Mountains, form the highest range in the Czech Republic and run along the border with Poland. They are a national park, with open ridges, glacial valleys and mountain huts, and they are popular for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
Main bases
- Špindlerův Mlýn: the best known resort town, with lifts, hotels and trailheads.
- Pec pod Sněžkou: a base for the route toward Sněžka, the highest peak in the country.
- Harrachov: known for ski jumping and a quieter feel.
Hiking
Trails range from easy valley walks to long ridge routes. Weather can change quickly at altitude, even in summer. Bring layers, rain gear and enough water. See hiking and cycling basics.
Skiing
Winter sports are well developed, with downhill, cross-country and family-friendly slopes. Check live snow conditions and lift status before you go. See winter in the Czech Republic.
Getting there
The mountains are usually reached from Prague by train and bus, often with a change. Journey times are a few hours, so many visitors stay at least one night. Check current timetables.
