The Lednice-Valtice area in South Moravia is a large landscape of chateaux, parks, ponds and follies, shaped by one noble family over centuries and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. It sits in wine country, which makes it a favourite for slow cycling days.
What to see
- Lednice Chateau and gardens: a neo-Gothic chateau with a large park and greenhouse.
- Valtice Chateau: a baroque chateau in the nearby town, with notable wine cellars and tastings.
- The Minaret: a tall tower in the park, popular for views of the surrounding landscape.
- Parkland follies: small buildings and viewpoints scattered between the two towns.
Getting there
The nearest major rail hub is Břeclav, reached by train from Brno and from Prague with a change. From Břeclav, local trains and buses go to Lednice and Valtice. Check current timetables and plan the return journey before you start.
Cycling the area
- Flat, well-marked paths make it easy for most riders.
- You can rent bikes locally. Check availability, especially at weekends.
- Many people cycle between Lednice and Valtice, stopping at wine cellars. Keep alcohol limits in mind if you are riding.
Wine and food
The region is one of the main Czech wine areas. See our Czech wine guide for grape varieties and regions, and combine a visit here with autumn harvest season if you can.
