The Czech Republic has one of the best-marked hiking networks in Europe, and cycling routes are growing across the country. This guide covers the practical basics so you can plan with confidence.
Trail markings
Hiking trails are marked with painted stripes on trees, posts and rocks. A white stripe between two coloured stripes shows the trail, and the colour (red, blue, green or yellow) identifies the route. Signposts at junctions give destinations and walking times. Times are often optimistic or conservative depending on the signpost, so allow extra.
Maps and navigation
Local hiking maps are widely sold, and popular mapping apps show marked trails. Download offline maps before you head out, because mobile signal can be patchy in forests and valleys.
Cycling
- Long-distance cycle routes follow rivers and old railway lines in places.
- You can rent bikes in many towns. Check availability in peak season.
- Some trains carry bikes. Check the rules for your route and book where needed. See travelling by train.
Safety and etiquette
- Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Carry layers and rain gear.
- Take water and snacks, since huts and cafés may be closed.
- Follow local rules in national parks, including route restrictions.
- Tick-borne illness exists in some areas. Check health guidance before summer hikes.
Where to start
Good starter regions include Bohemian Paradise, Bohemian Switzerland, Krkonoše and Šumava. For solo hikers, see hiking and nature for solo travellers.
