Christmas markets are one of the best reasons to visit the Czech Republic in winter. Most cities set up stalls on their main squares in the weeks before Christmas, with wooden huts, carols, mulled wine and seasonal food. Exact opening dates change each year, so check the official city tourism sites before booking.
Where to go
- Prague: the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets are the best known and the busiest. Smaller markets in other squares are often calmer.
- Brno: several markets around the centre, with a friendly local feel. See our Brno guide.
- Olomouc: a market in a handsome baroque square. See Olomouc.
- Český Krumlov: a small, atmospheric setting, but very popular. See Český Krumlov.
What to eat and drink
- Svařák (mulled wine) and medovina (mead)
- Trdelník, a sweet rolled pastry that is sold everywhere in tourist areas
- Klobása (grilled sausage), bramborák (potato pancake) and roasted chestnuts
- Christmas carp, a traditional dish you will see sold from tanks on city streets in late December
Planning tips
- Visit on a weekday or in the early evening to avoid the thickest crowds.
- Book hotels early for December, especially in Prague.
- Dress warmly and wear shoes with grip, since squares can be icy.
- Many shops and some attractions close on 24 to 26 December. Check before you travel.
