Late April through May, and September, are the strongest windows: warm enough for comfortable sightseeing, meaningfully quieter than peak summer, and better accommodation pricing. The full answer depends on what you’re prioritising, since Prague and the Czech Republic reward different seasons in different ways.
Spring (March to May) #
Temperatures climb from around 5 to 10°C in March to a comfortable 15 to 22°C by May. Crowds are noticeably thinner than summer, the castle gardens and Stromovka park come into bloom through April and May, and the Prague Spring Music Festival in May is one of Central Europe’s major classical events. This is arguably the best overall season for a first visit.
Summer (June to August) #
Warm to hot (22 to 32°C), and the peak tourist season by a wide margin. The Old Town Square and Charles Bridge are at maximum density in July and August, accommodation prices peak, and popular day trips like Český Krumlov need an early start to beat the day-tripper crowds. Worth it for outdoor culture and long daylight hours, but the busiest and most expensive time to go.
Autumn (September to November) #
September specifically is excellent: still warm (17 to 22°C), noticeably quieter once the school holidays end, and the light quality is genuinely photogenic. October brings the Moravian wine harvest and autumn colour in Prague’s parks; November turns colder and greyer as the city transitions toward Christmas.
Winter (December to February) #
Genuinely cold (often below freezing in January and February), but atmospheric: the Old Town Square Christmas market (December to early January) is one of the best in Central Europe, and Prague with snow and without summer crowds has a specific, different character. January and February are the cheapest and quietest months of the year for accommodation.
The Practical Recommendation #
If you can only pick one window, late April to mid-May or all of September offer the best balance of weather, crowds, and price. Avoid July and August if crowds bother you; embrace December specifically for the Christmas market atmosphere despite the cold.
