Take the bus. This is one of the few Czech routes where the answer is unambiguous: there’s no direct train, and the direct bus from Prague Florenc is faster, cheaper, and simpler than any alternative.
By Bus (Recommended) #
Direct services run from Prague Florenc bus station to Český Krumlov in 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. RegioJet and FlixBus both operate the route; RegioJet’s buses are the more comfortable of the two. Departures start around 7am and run through the day, with the last return typically between 6 and 7pm, worth confirming on idos.cz or in the operator apps, since the timetable shifts seasonally.
Cost is roughly CZK 220 to 290 one way. Book 2 to 3 days ahead for summer weekday travel and 5 to 7 days for summer weekends, when the morning departures genuinely fill up. Outside peak season you can usually buy on the day.
The bus station in Český Krumlov is a short walk from the historic centre, so no onward transport is needed on arrival.
By Car #
About 180 kilometres via the D3 motorway, roughly 2.5 hours. Worth considering if you want to stop en route, Hluboká Castle is the usual detour, or if you’re continuing into South Bohemia rather than returning to Prague. Note that private vehicles can’t enter the narrow streets of the historic centre; park in the lots on the outskirts and walk in. By Train (Not Recommended) #
There’s no direct rail connection. The route requires a train to České Budějovice and then a bus or regional train onward, totalling 3.5 to 4 hours. Slower and more complicated than the direct bus for no real gain, unless you specifically want to break the journey in České Budějovice.
Guided Tours #
Organised day tours from Prague include transport and commentary, and suit visitors who’d rather not handle the logistics. They cost considerably more than the independent bus and tie you to the group’s schedule, which in Český Krumlov’s case means arriving and leaving during the busiest hours.
One Recommendation #
