The honest answer is that the best Czech beer experience isn’t at a famous brewery, it’s at an ordinary neighbourhood pub where the beer is poured properly and costs CZK 50. That said, a few specific places genuinely justify the trip.
The One Genuine Pilgrimage: Plzeň #
The Pilsner Urquell brewery in Plzeň, 1.5 hours by fast train from Prague, is where pale golden lager was invented in 1842. The underground cellar tour is the version to book: it ends with unpasteurised, unfiltered Pilsner Urquell drawn straight from wooden conditioning barrels in the original sandstone cellars. Prague: The Historic Brewpubs #
U Fleků, brewing since 1499, serves its own dark lager in a large beer-hall setting near the New Town. It’s touristy and priced accordingly, but the beer is genuinely its own and the building is historic. Staropramen’s brewery in Smíchov offers tours and tastings for anyone wanting the industrial-scale counterpart.
Prague: Where the Beer Is Actually Best #
The Lokál group serves perfectly poured Pilsner Urquell using the proper slow Czech pour, and is the most reliable option for visitors who want the pour done right without hunting. Beyond that, the real answer is the neighbourhood hospoda: take a tram to Vinohrady or Žižkov, find a pub with no English menu in the window and Czech voices inside, and order “jedno pivo, prosím.” Beer will be CZK 45 to 80 instead of CZK 150 on the Old Town Square, and it will be better.

Beyond Prague #
