Is Czech beer really cheaper than water?

2 min read

In a restaurant or pub, often yes. In a supermarket, no. The claim is true in the specific setting where most visitors encounter it, which is why it’s stuck around as a piece of Czech travel folklore.

The Restaurant Comparison #

At a traditional Czech pub away from the tourist areas, a half-litre of draught lager typically costs CZK 45 to 80. A bottle of mineral water on the same menu often costs CZK 40 to 60 for a considerably smaller serving. Compare per volume and the beer frequently comes out cheaper. This isn’t a trick of the menu, it reflects genuinely low beer production costs and a market where pubs compete hard on the price of their house lager.

Why Czech Beer Is So Cheap #

The Czech Republic has the highest per-capita beer consumption in the world and a deep domestic brewing industry supplied by local barley and Saaz hops grown within the country. Short supply chains, enormous volume, and fierce competition between pubs all push the price of a standard half-litre down. Beer is treated as an everyday staple rather than a premium product.

Where the Claim Breaks Down #

Supermarket pricing tells a different story: a 1.5-litre bottle of water costs around CZK 10 to 20, considerably cheaper per litre than any beer. And in the Old Town Square tourist zone, beer prices climb to CZK 150 to 200 a half-litre, well above what water costs anywhere.

The Practical Point #

Prague tap water is safe, good quality, and free. Most restaurants will bring tap water on request, though you have to ask specifically, and it’s worth being clear you want tap rather than bottled, since some tourist-area restaurants will quietly bring bottled and charge for it. That specific tactic is covered in the Prague scams guide. Carrying a reusable bottle removes the question entirely.

So: the saying holds in a pub, and it’s a fair illustration of how cheap good Czech beer actually is. It just isn’t an argument for drinking beer instead of water.
