The Czech Republic is genuinely underrated for hiking, dense forests, sandstone rock cities, and a border ridge of real mountains, all within a well-marked trail network that’s among the best-organised in Europe. These are the spots worth building a day or more around.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park #
The most accessible from Prague (1.5 to 2 hours north) and the most dramatic for the effort. Sandstone gorges, deep forest, and the Pravčická brána, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe. Trails run from easy walks to full-day routes, and the Kamenice river gorge boat sections are a distinctive addition. The strongest single nature day trip from the capital.
Adršpach-Teplice Rocks #
A sandstone “rock city” in northeastern Bohemia: towering stone towers, narrow ravines, and paths that thread between cliff walls. Genuinely otherworldly, popular with Czech hikers and climbers but rarely mentioned in international guides. Best as an overnight given the distance from Prague.
Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) #
The country’s highest range, on the Polish border, topped by Sněžka at 1,603 metres, reachable on well-marked trails or by cable car. Serious mountain hiking in summer and the Czech Republic’s main skiing region in winter. A different scale of landscape from the forests and rock cities elsewhere.
Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) #
A UNESCO Geopark northeast of Prague, with fairytale sandstone rock formations, forest trails, and medieval castles scattered through the landscape. Closer and gentler than Adršpach, and combinable with castle visits for a mixed history-and-nature day.
Šumava National Park #
The country’s largest protected forest, along the Bavarian and Austrian borders in the south. Vast woodland, glacial lakes, and the upper Vltava, with good wildlife and a quieter, more remote feel than the northern parks. Naturally combined with a Český Krumlov trip, since it begins about 40km west of the town.
Podyjí and South Moravia #
Podyjí National Park follows the Dyje river gorge in South Moravia, less visited and rich in biodiversity. Combine it with the surrounding Moravian wine country around Mikulov for a hiking-and-wine day that pairs well with a Brno base.
Practical Notes #
Czech trails use a colour-coded waymarking system (KČT) that’s consistent nationwide and genuinely reliable, download an offline map like Mapy.cz, the Czech-made app that covers every marked trail. Most of these parks are far easier with a car; check your travel insurance covers hiking, since some policies exclude it.
