5 to 10 days is the range where the Czech Republic really opens up beyond Prague, and the right itinerary depends on exactly where in that range you land. Here’s how to think about it.
5 to 6 Days: Prague Plus Two Day Trips #
This is enough time for Prague properly explored (4 days: Old Town, Prague Castle and Malá Strana, the Jewish Quarter and Vinohrady, and one day for Vyšehrad or Holešovice) plus one full-day trip and one half-day trip. Český Krumlov (a full day, bus 3 hours each way) and Kutná Hora (a half-day, train 1 hour each way) are the strongest combination: two genuinely different experiences, a UNESCO medieval town and a Gothic cathedral with the extraordinary Sedlec Ossuary, without overcommitting travel time.
7 Days: The Standard First-Time Itinerary #
Seven days is the length most first-time visitors land on, and for good reason: four days in Prague, a full day in Český Krumlov, a half-day in Kutná Hora, and a final unhurried day back in Prague. The full 1-week itinerary lays this out day by day with specific timing and transport details.
8 to 10 Days: Adding Moravia or a Second City #
Beyond a week, the most rewarding addition is Brno and the Moravian wine region, rather than squeezing in more Bohemian day trips. An overnight in Brno (2.5 hours by fast train) with a day trip out to Mikulov’s wine cellars is a genuinely different Czech experience from the Prague-and-castles circuit, and gives the trip a second centre of gravity rather than making everything radiate from Prague. Alternatively, Plzeň for the Pilsner Urquell brewery and Karlovy Vary for the Baroque spa town both work well as additional full-day trips if Moravia doesn’t fit your route.
What to Skip if You’re Closer to 5 Days #
Don’t try to fit in Brno, Karlovy Vary, and Plzeň alongside Prague and Český Krumlov in under a week; each of these deserves a genuine full day of travel time and destination time, and cramming three or four day trips into a short visit produces a rushed, transit-heavy trip rather than a good one. Two well-chosen day trips beats four rushed ones.
The Full Breakdowns #
For the complete day-by-day version of a week, see the 1-week itinerary. For 10 days to two weeks with Brno and Moravia included, see the 2-week itinerary, which can be trimmed by two or three days without losing its structure.
